Abstract

Tested plans and clear objectives are essential to respond effectively to emergencies such as earthquakes, tsunamis or volcanic eruptions. For this reason, in 2019, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) adopted a protocol for managing seismic and tsunami emergencies. During the “EXE SISMA dello Stretto 2022” exercise, organized and coordinated by the Civil Protection Department (DPC), INGV tested these protocols in a simulated event in the Strait of Messina, focusing particularly on evaluating the activities carried out by the Crisis Unit Secretariat and the Emergency Operations Group “Coordinamento Operativo Emergenza Sismica” (COES). Additionally, tools developed for sharing multidisciplinary data collected by the institute and for drafting and disseminating scientific reports critical to crisis management were tested.
